That was the title of John Brunner's grim SF apocalyptic version of a poisoned America, written in 1972. Well, now there's an interesting web site to help keep track of orbiting stuff. The Sheep Look Up Characters: Ben, Charles, Richard, Hurley, Sawyer, Jacob, Jacob's Nemesis, Sayid, OC, more. This is a classic dying-environment near-future novel from the early 70s. John Brunner's "The Sheep Look Up" is an astonishingly prescient environmental/political multi-storyline ensemble opus. 70 percent of his work is incredibly dull. The Sheep Look Up I actually finished this one last Sunday, but I wanted to mull it over a little before writing about it. Brunner is completely hit or miss. The novel's setting is decidedly dystopian, the book dealing with the deterioration of the environment in the United States. (EDIT to note: yes, and about a hundred others, I'm sure. Occasionally, his release point is somewhere up near Lakewood. BACK IN THE 1990's there was a local Toronto band called "Sheep Look Up", always loved that name. Also John Brunner's STAND ON ZANZIBAR, THE SHEEP LOOK UP, and, most importantly for cyberpunk's ancestry, THE SHOCKWAVE RIDER. The Sheep Look Up wins my award for most unique reaction after having finished a book. I felt all covered in grime and hungry for fresh air and water.
